Slaven Crnić (Visiting PhD 2020)

Slaven Crnić was a visiting PhD student at the Institute of Slavic Studies at the University of Vienna in the summer and winter semesters of 2020.  He is a PhD Candidate in Comparative Gender Studies at the Central European University, Budapest. With a major focus on Ivo Andrić and Meša Selimović, Slaven’s doctoral project examines several Yugoslav-era canonical novels from the vantage point of gendered relations between male characters. In particular, the research aims to heighten the visibility of structural embeddedness of male bonds within the corpus and explore how the dynamics between male homosociality and queerness stage the broader themes of modernity and cultural alterity.

Slaven holds a BA and MA in Cultural Studies (University of Rijeka). His research interests include literary theory, South Slavic literature, cultural studies, and gender and queer theory.
